Bellapais Monastery Village (Kyrenia, Bellapais)

The road from Kyrenia up to Bellapais climbs steadily over its last few kilometres; at one of the bends the stone arches of the monastery appear between the trees, and a little further down the slope sits the hotel that carries their name. For years we have been telling guests who take the two for a single place the same thing: Bellapais Monastery Village is not the monastery itself, but a separate property that shares only its name and its hillside with it. The practical side of that distinction shows up straight away on the booking screen, because the hotel does not accept guests under twelve, and five separate sources state this rule in the very same sentence. The second limit you see once you step out of the door: the hotel has no beach of its own. Most of the conversation ends up knotted around these two points anyway.

In the Shadow of the Monastery, at the Edge of the Village

On the hotel's own page the address reads Topkapı Caddesi, Beylerbeyi; Beylerbeyi is the Turkish administrative name for Bellapais. Some booking sites, on the other hand, list the same property under Ozanköy, so a guest searching for two different village names ends up on the same hillside, at the same gate. The monastery that gives the hotel its name is about two kilometres from that gate, a few minutes' drive. This elevation at the foot of the Five Finger Mountains leaves the rooms and common areas with a view stretching down to Kyrenia harbour and castle, while the town centre below is a little over three kilometres away as the crow flies. The monastery's reputation for weddings, its stone courtyard and its centuries of history belong to a different venue. The hotel also takes on wedding and event organisation, though I think it is healthier to consider that service separately from its neighbour's fame and on a much smaller scale.

Fifty Rooms, or Sixty-Five?

The figures given for the room count wander between fifty and sixty-five, because the hotel does not announce a definitive total. We could not pin it down either; each source insists on its own number. What is certain is that accommodation is sold in three separate forms. Standard rooms in the main building, suites and bungalow-style mini villas scattered through the garden all sit together on the same property, and third-party sites mostly show it as "three-star". Since room sizes in square metres appear in no source, it is worth confirming the room type by name when you book. At Bellapais Monastery Village, a bungalow in the garden and a room in the main building differ both in view and in the distance you walk to breakfast in the morning, which is why the same price can buy two quite different holidays. The hotel was built spread across the village, and its room list looks much the same.

The Under-Twelve Rule at the Door

Children under twelve are not accepted. The hotel's own page states this clearly, and four more independent sources confirm it (which makes the rule the property's most solid fact). For a couple without children, a group of friends or a guest looking for quiet by the pool, it is a straight gain. For a family setting out with a small child, the hotel is crossed off the list at the very first step... Since the line is drawn at twelve, a family arriving with a teenager passes through this door. The ones filtered out are groups with young children. The hotel gives its reasoning nowhere, and rather than guess we will count what is in plain sight. The property is on a mountainside, the coast is far off, there is no entertainment centre inside, there is no casino either, and the guest looking for table games belongs at the big properties in central Kyrenia. The quiet comes from just that: the hillside, the distant coast and a garden without children.

The Hotel Does Not Publish a Nightly Rate

On prices, unfortunately, it is impossible to find a single fixed, date-stamped figure; since rates vary constantly by season and by the room type chosen, the soundest route is to confirm the current offer directly with the hotel or an agency. And this uncertainty doubles in the winter months. Although the property is open for bookings in the 2026 season, which social areas will be operating during the winter period is not clearly announced. If you are planning a holiday in a quiet month like December or January, you must ask before going whether the indoor pool or the main restaurant will be in service that week.

In locations like this, leaning against a mountainside, winter is in any case a little harsher and windier than on the flat ground by the coast. Especially if you land on a rainy week, the whole flow of the hotel inevitably squeezes into the rooftop restaurant and the indoor spaces. Because the hotel does not clearly share an official pricing policy, the most honest and impartial guide we have is once again guest experience; for instance, the 4.1 score on TripAdvisor across 535 reviews gives us a clear idea of the property's general line. So when an offer lands in your hands, the first question should be "How much?", but right after that you should not neglect to ask "Exactly which room type and which week of the year does this figure belong to?"

Breakfast to Order, Heated Pool

Breakfast is served every morning between 08.00 and 10.00, and it is served to order. What does to order mean? You sit down at the table and the plate comes from the kitchen. Note that this arrangement also binds the late riser: the kitchen closes at ten. For a guest used to an open buffet it is a different set-up, and for a guest expecting a food-and-drink flow running all day, the property simply does not work that way. The concept rests on a bed-and-breakfast basis, which is why one classification puts the property in the "Garni" category. Some tour operator packages also sell a broader concept. Dining is split across two venues: the rooftop restaurant and the indoor à la carte option together form the main service, and a few bars from the lobby to the poolside round out the arrangement.

While the food and drink side is scattered like this, the picture at the pools is clearer: alongside two outdoor pools there is a heated indoor pool, and because it is heated it operates regardless of the calendar. The hotel has no beach of its own; the nearest sandy beach is about a thirteen-minute ride on the free shuttle, and the same shuttle also runs to central Kyrenia three times a day. The spa section has a sauna, a Turkish bath and massage, and one listing also mentions a steam room.

The Road Up the Hillside

A guest arriving from Ercan Airport should count on a drive of about forty-five minutes; Kyrenia's bus terminal and harbour lie four kilometres below, and it is a nineteen-kilometre road to St. Hilarion Castle. Walking to the monastery is possible, but the way back is uphill from start to finish. Since the shuttle down to the beach ties the day to its timetable, a guest planning to go down in the morning and return in the evening gets the schedule and the name of the beach from reception. At Bellapais Monastery Village most of the day is spent on the hillside; if you are going down, it is either the car or the shuttle time, and there is no third way.
