You've landed at Ercan and opened "Bolt" on your phone. The map shows the north, but not a single car is moving on it — and it's the same picture on "Uber". On the island, a taxi is still something you call by phone, on WhatsApp or from a rank. And nobody tells you what the first figure you hear is based on. Within cities, the taximeter tariff printed by the Permit Board applies. On the airport and hotel runs, each operator's own price list is in force — and that list is written without asking anyone. If Cyprus taxi fares give two different figures for the same route, this is why: the taximeter works out around two thousand lira to Kyrenia, while the fixed lists open at 2,300 TL.
Who Sets the Taximeter Tariff
The tariff is set by the Permit Board under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport; municipalities have no authority here. The decision means a single tariff nationwide: the taxi you board in Kyrenia charges the same figure as the one in Famagusta. The figures have been unchanged since 24 January 2025 and were still valid at the end of August 2026. In the daytime, from 06.00 to 22.00, the flag-fall is 112.81 TL and each kilometre 43.16 TL. At night, from 22.00 to 06.00 in the morning, the flag-fall rises to 136.30 TL and the kilometre to 51.50 TL — a difference of roughly 20 percent. The official text of the tariff is hard to find online; the figures are confirmed by independent calculators giving the same result and by the route prices raised in Parliament in April 2026. The ministry has also published a tablet-taximeter specification: a screen of at least 8 inches, five languages, a panic button, card payment and integration with a taxi-hailing app. How many vehicles have it installed is unclear; in Parliament it was said that taxi drivers in the hotel and airport zones were resisting digitalisation.

Fixed Prices from Ercan to Your Hotel
There's no institution setting prices at the airport exit — each firm writes its own list. Differences of up to double have been measured between what two operators charge for the same route. The figures Minister Erhan Arıklı read out in Parliament in April 2026 aren't a tariff either, but market averages: Kyrenia 2,400 TL, Nicosia 1,500 TL, Bafra 3,200 TL. Calculate the same four routes both ways and the gap looks like this:
| Route | Operator fixed price (one way, per vehicle) | By taximeter, daytime, approx. |
|---|---|---|
| Ercan-Nicosia (23 km) | 1,800-3,803 TL | 1,100 TL |
| Ercan-Kyrenia (40-45 km) | 2,300-3,803 TL | 1,840-2,055 TL |
| Ercan-Famagusta (50 km) | 2,600-4,563 TL | 2,270 TL |
| Ercan-Dipkarpaz (96 km) | From 6,400 TL (sedan) | 4,257 TL |
The upper end of the bands belongs to the VIP and minibus class; with a standard sedan or a six-seat Vito you can get to Kyrenia for 2,300-2,800 TL. Is the price per vehicle or per person? Per vehicle. A sedan carries three people, a Vito six or seven, for the same fare; an 8-16 seat Sprinter runs roughly double the sedan. To the Iskele and Long Beach hotels you pay 2,600-2,800 TL, to Bafra 3,600-5,324 TL. Going to the tip of the Karpaz Peninsula in a 17-seat Transit costs 14,400 TL.
The booking side holds fewer surprises. Firms ask for a reservation at least a day ahead, track your flight and don't charge extra for delays. The right to cancel also stays open until one day before the journey.
The official "T"-plate rank at the exit runs on the meter and looks cheaper on paper. Once the night tariff, luggage and waiting are added — and haggling on top — most of that advantage melts away. If an offer comes from a car without a T plate, don't accept it; for insurance and liability, it's either a T plate or a KITSAB-certified agency.
How the Bill Adds Up in Town
Within cities, Cyprus taxi fares come down to a single formula: flag-fall, plus kilometres times the unit price. The rest is a matter of distance. Calculated by the tariff, the three kilometres from the walled city (Suriçi) to Dereboyu in Nicosia come to about 240 TL by day and 290 TL at night. From central Kyrenia to Bellapais, six kilometres, it's around 370 TL; to Alsancak, ten kilometres, about 545 TL. From Famagusta to Salamis, nine kilometres works out at close to 500 TL.
The Kyrenia rank's own notice quotes 200-250 TL for short hops — a figure consistent with the tariff. Go intercity and the total grows: Kyrenia-Nicosia, 25 kilometres, is 1,190 TL by day and 1,425 TL at night; Kyrenia-Famagusta, at 70 kilometres, pushes 3,130 TL. Waiting time stands as a separate item in the tariff, but no verified amount could be found for 2026. There's no separate item for luggage in the tariff. Still, if you run into a driver asking for luggage money, asking for a receipt usually settles the matter. On the hotel strip, the meter often never gets switched on at all; the driver names a figure upfront and the haggling proceeds from there.
On the KIBHAS Bus, the Fare Is Per Person
For those who want a shared bus, there's KIBHAS; since 2009 it has linked Ercan to Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, Lefke and Morphou (Güzelyurt). August 2026 tickets: Nicosia 350 TL; Kyrenia, Famagusta and Morphou 450 TL; Lefke 550 TL. In April every route was 50 TL cheaper; the bus, too, got a price hike over the summer. Unlike the transfer lists, the fare here is paid per person. The bus departs from opposite the arrivals terminal exit. On the Nicosia, Kyrenia and Famagusta routes there are 16 departures a day, the first at 00.30 and the last at 22.30; the Lefke and Morphou route runs six services each way daily. If the bus fills up, it can set off without waiting for its scheduled time.
Two pieces of luggage up to 30 kilos in total travel free, and children under five pay nothing if they don't take a seat. Tickets are bought at kibhas.org or through KIBHAS's phone app. For those headed to Long Beach, the route has one gap: the bus ends at the Famagusta terminal, and you cover the remaining stretch to the hotel separately by taxi. Up to how many people does the maths favour the bus? Two people pay 900 TL to Kyrenia, while a private car opens at 2,300 TL — that's where the gap begins. For a family of four, the bus climbs to 1,800 TL while a fixed transfer stays at 2,300-2,800 TL, so the bus's advantage melts as the group grows. If you step off the airport corridor, there's a third option too: the intercity shared minibus (dolmuş), Nicosia-Kyrenia at 100 TL under the January 2026 tariff.
No Uber, but There Is WhatsApp
Uber and Bolt don't operate in the TRNC (North Cyprus). Bolt's "Famagusta" coverage means Paralimni and Ayia Napa in the South — it doesn't cover the northern city of Famagusta. There have been a few local app attempts and none has stuck; even finding out which one is still standing in 2026 is a task in itself. In practice, you call the rank or send your location on WhatsApp and ask the price. Nearly every taxi rank and transfer firm publishes a WhatsApp number, and most tourists arrange their hotel transfer through those numbers. The state's single-app plan exists in the specification, but no downloadable app has materialised. For Cyprus taxi fares, the most reliable source of a current figure is still the reply that comes on WhatsApp.
Hotel Transfers, Night Flights and the Fare-Hike Agenda
At casino hotels, the airport transfer is usually the agency's business; call the hotel and they'll redirect you to the firm that sold the package. On a flight-inclusive package, the transfer is included in the price. If you've bought a room only, the transfer doesn't come automatically — and most guests learn this at the airport exit. Transfer firms sell these hotels a private vehicle for you, not a shared shuttle. Those landing on a night flight face a separate calculation. Fixed lists may also apply a night surcharge, and the interval the operator counts as night may not match the taximeter's 22.00-06.00 window.
Ask for the price in writing before setting off. The tariff has a shelf life too. In April 2026 taxi drivers staged a protest and a 70 percent hike came onto the agenda; Minister Arıklı said "impossible" and the tariff didn't change, but the 40 percent option remains on the table. The demand the Famagusta Taxi Drivers' Union puts first, ahead of a hike, is stopping unlicensed transport and a proper tax regime. The figures show where the trade is squeezed: commercial vehicle insurance has gone from 6,000 TL to 35,000 TL, fuel from 27 TL to 60 TL. If a new Permit Board decision comes towards the end of the year, all the figures above go stale in a day. For now, the valid figure for Cyprus taxi fares is 112.81 TL on the flag-fall. If you come across a bill implying less than that, it's left over from the old tariff; let that be your yardstick until the next Permit Board decision.
