Winter Holiday in Cyprus: December-February Guide

Nobody should call someone considering Cyprus in winter "crazy", and in fact almost everyone starts with the same question: "can you swim?" The direct answer is no, not between December and February, and the real decision is made elsewhere. On the beaches around Kyrenia, by December there are no sunbeds or snack bars left and the boat tour season closed long ago, but in that same week you climb the steps of St. Hilarion in a far thinner crowd.

Frankly, we too were ready to sum winter up as the dead season, but when we set the occupancy rates alongside the opening hours of the archaeological sites, we realised it is not that straightforward. While daytime temperatures in Kyrenia hover between 16 and 18 degrees, hotel occupancy stays below thirty percent; the first figure makes sightseeing easier, the second brings prices down. The rest depends on which of those two figures matters more to you...

Sixteen Degrees by Day, Nine by Night

Winter days in Kyrenia are 16 to 18 degrees and nights 9 to 11, and this band barely moves across the three months. The Famagusta side can be a touch milder and noticeably drier. The reason is the mountain itself. Kyrenia, on the northern slope of the Kyrenia Mountains (Beşparmak), receives 534 millimetres of rain a year while Famagusta stops at 360, so the same mountain produces two different winters. The wettest month of the year, December, comes with 133 millimetres of rain and eleven rainy days, followed by January with thirteen rainy days, while February drops to 79 millimetres and becomes the driest month of winter. Going by the table in front of us, budget for losing two days of a week's programme to rain.

On the sea side there is nothing left to argue about. The measurements show 17-21 degrees for December, 16-18 for January and 15-17 for February, with a winter average of 18.3 degrees. These waters are for looking at while you walk, not for swimming. There is no hope for snow lovers. Apart from the highest parts of the Kyrenia range, no white scenery appears, and even there it is very rare.

The Sites Are Open in Winter Too

The archaeological sites do not close in winter; it is just that the opening hours get shorter. The Department of Antiquities and Museums page carries only the "Summer Hours" period covering 1 April to 31 October, with no separate winter band announced, whereas in the low season the gates generally stay open between 08.00 and 15.30, and once it is past three in the afternoon the visit is over. Among the records we scanned there is a finding made in 2024: seventeen of thirty-three museums and sites are closed on weekends and public holidays, and the official page still has not filled the gap.

Kantara is the one clear exception within this haze: it operates 10.00-15.30 on weekdays, last entry ends at 14.45, and it is closed on weekends and public holidays. Anyone heading up the Karpaz road on a Saturday morning strikes that castle off the programme. Which figure can you trust for St. Hilarion's winter hours? Three different figures are in circulation, so you need to call the ticket office and confirm. On the other hand, winter gives you one gain: no queues form outside the sites.

The List of Closed Facilities Is Long

So far so good; next comes the facilities side. The water parks lead the way: the water park season across the island runs from May to October, and the only property that announced firm dates was Salamis Bay Conti. The boat tour season opens in April or May and closes in October; there are no scheduled departures in winter. What changes on the beaches is not the ground but the service. With the sunbeds, snack bars and lifeguard arrangements not operating, the beach turns into a walking area.

Kaya Artemis in Bafra operates twelve months a year, but its kids' club and beach are closed in winter. Limak Cyprus carries on with its 1,400 square metre heated indoor pool but does not run its water slides until April, and its Turkish à la carte restaurant stays closed too. Kyrenia's big hotels shrink as well, with the programme shifting towards the spa and the indoor areas. That said, the property pages we compiled will not tell you how the day passes indoors, which is why counting pools is useless when planning a Cyprus winter holiday.

How Much Do Prices Drop?

Winter's most tangible return is the price, because in January-March 2026 the average occupancy of TRNC properties stayed at 29.1 percent, and the year before it was 29.9 percent; seven out of every ten rooms sit empty. As far as we can see, empty rooms open up room for bargaining, and you will see that margin most at the coastal resorts, where the winter nightly rate drops 20-30 percent below the summer base. This is exactly where a Cyprus winter holiday budget parts ways with a summer one...

The difference is not the same in every segment. You will notice that at mid-sized properties on the coast the gap stays around 5 percent, in Famagusta's city hotels it reaches 20 percent, and at the big resorts it ranges between 12 and 29 percent. Nicosia breaks the rule. The capital holds an almost flat rate all year round, and in March 2026 it recorded the island's highest occupancy at 42.4 percent, while for flights the cheapest month of the year is January, with the cheap band lasting until the end of March. The early-booking window that opens at the end of October runs until early June, and the winter months fall right in the middle of it.

Citrus in January, Mountain Tulips in December

Unlike the dryness of summer, winter turns the island's interior green. Morphou (Guzelyurt) is the TRNC's citrus centre; the harvest begins in the first days of January, grapefruit, lemons and mandarins are picked first, and the Valencia oranges come later. The mountain tulip, the local anemone, opens white in December, then shifts from red to purple tones and lasts until April. On the lower slopes of the Kyrenia Mountains you may come across cyclamen in winter; the hillside takes on a colour it does not carry in summer...

Is winter suited to walking? At 16 to 18 degrees by day there is no such problem as summer heat, but ten to thirteen rainy days a month and early nightfall narrow the programme. So the picture cuts both ways. On rocky and stepped sections, tread carefully after rain.

What Goes in the Suitcase?

Daytime weather of 16 to 18 degrees means a light layer over a thin top; when the sun comes out you need no more. Because nights drop to 9 to 11 degrees, a thick sweater or a coat goes into the evening programme, and the wind on the seafront pulls the temperature a little lower still. With ten to thirteen rainy days a month a raincoat is not up for debate, and for wet stone surfaces a shoe with a sole that grips goes on the list too.

The heating method in the TRNC varies from property to property; central heating is not standard everywhere. The most practical move for you is this: asking how the room is heated before you book is worth far more than the star count. In the end you are choosing between an empty castle courtyard and a nightly rate down by thirty percent on one side, and a closed water park and a 16-degree sea on the other. A Cyprus winter holiday turns out well or badly depending on which of those two pans weighs more for you.
