Someone strolling along Kyrenia (Girne) harbour in February and someone sitting at the very same table in August are not experiencing — or describing — the same island. In one, the sea is 15 degrees and it rains ten days a month; in the other, the water has warmed to 29 and not a single drop has fallen in three months. That is why the answer to when to visit Cyprus depends entirely on what you are looking for. Warm seas, empty hotels, wildflower-covered hillsides and festival stages are each tucked into different corners of the year.
Month-by-Month Temperatures and Sea Water in Kyrenia
Kyrenia is the reference station for the coast. The Meteorology Department's long-term averages and sea temperature readings look like this:

A few things hide between the numbers. The sea averages 22.6 degrees over the year, hovering around 18.3 in winter and 27 in summer; Kyrenia's sheltered harbour keeps the water a touch warmer than its surroundings. Because Kyrenia sits on the northern slopes of the Besparmak (Five Finger) range, it is one of the rainiest spots on the Cypriot coast. Nearly half of the annual 534 millimetres falls in December and January, and the official rainy season runs from October to May. The Meteorology Department declared 2025 the second-warmest year of the past fifty: against a 1991-2020 average of 19.5 degrees, 2025 came in at 20.5.
What Happens on the Coast While Nicosia Boils in Summer
In July and August, the question of when to visit Cyprus comes down mostly to where you will be staying. In the Meteorology Department's forecast for 18-24 July 2026, inland areas ranged between 39-42 degrees while the coast stayed at 33-36; on 19 July, Nicosia (Lefkosa) hit 38 while Famagusta stayed at 32 — a gap of 5-6 degrees that holds all summer. What eases things on the coast is the wind. It starts light to moderate from the south and west, then swings to the northwest towards the end of the period, strengthening at times, and by late August you may even see morning fog. On humidity, the official language never goes beyond "a relatively humid air mass". Are the nights comfortable? Kyrenia's August normal is 23 degrees, rising to 26-27 during heatwaves.
And the two coasts are not the same, either. Famagusta gets 360 millimetres of rain a year, well below Kyrenia's 534. Since that figure comes from the 2017-2024 normal, it is not a like-for-like comparison with Kyrenia's long-term table, but the direction fits the geography: the east coast has no mountains behind it. Summer daytime temperatures measure 1-1.5 degrees higher in Famagusta. These months also overlap with turtle season: hatchlings make their way to the sea from mid-July through October, night access at Alagadi is allowed only on SPOT volunteers' guided tours, and the beach is closed from 8 p.m. until morning. Spring: Flower-Covered Slopes and Concerts at the Abbey
In spring, the Besparmak slopes are carpeted with orchids, daisies, poppies and the Cyprus tulip (Tulipa cypria); the most common orchid group is Ophrys. Towards the end of April the interior starts to dry out, while the northern slopes stay in bloom until May. For walkers, there is the 255-kilometre ridge trail stretching from Korucam Point to Zafer Point (Cape Apostolos Andreas). The sea is not quite ready yet: 18-20 degrees in April, climbing to a swimmable 21-24 by late May. Bellapais Abbey, meanwhile, hosts two festivals back to back. The 21st Spring Music Festival runs 12 concerts between 11 April and 14 May, then on 18 May the 28th International Bellapais Music Festival takes over, adding nine more concerts through 23 June. Everything starts at 8 p.m. and admission is free.
Autumn: Summer in September, First Rain in October
Count September as an extension of summer. The sea sits at 28 degrees — the same as August — daytime highs at 31, and monthly rainfall at 5 millimetres. The crowds have thinned, the water is still warm, and the only snag is the airfare. In October the air drops to 27, the sea stays swimmable in the 24-26 range, and the first rain of the season falls this month: 37 millimetres over three days. In the first week of October, the olive festival sets up in the village of Zeytinlik; it ran 2-6 October in 2024 and 1-5 October in 2025, with the 2026 dates not yet announced. Is November winter? Not in Kyrenia. Daytime is 23 degrees, the sea 20-24 — hardy swimmers still go in, though it is not for everyone. November is also Enuygun's cheapest month for Kyrenia hotels, and travel agencies open their early-booking windows at the end of October.
Will Winter Rain Wreck Your Plans?
December, January and February are the three rainiest months: 10-13 days of rain in Kyrenia, daytime temperatures of 16-18 and nights of 9-11 degrees, with December the wettest month of the year at 133 millimetres. Will the rain wreck your plans? It might, because according to the Director of the Meteorology Department, rainfall now squeezes into a few days — even a few hours — rather than spreading across a month, raising the risk of flash floods and urban flooding. Keep your winter itinerary flexible; a museum or a Nicosia day fits nicely into a rainy one. According to the same source, January 2025 was the driest January in fifty years: against a normal of 74.9 kilograms per square metre, only 6 kilograms of rain fell. Snow falls only on the highest stretches of the Besparmak range, and even there very rarely.
Resorts also scale down in these months. Beach resorts close their beaches and kids' clubs; Kaya Artemis in Bafra operates year-round but its beach is closed in winter, while Kyrenia's casino hotels stay open all year. Occupancy across the island for January-March 2026 could not climb past 29.1 percent. In Morphou (Guzelyurt), the citrus harvest begins in the first days of January: lemons, grapefruit and mandarins first, with Valencia oranges coming later in the season. Winter is the cheapest answer to the question of when to visit Cyprus — the trade-off is an itinerary left open to the rain.
2026 Festival Calendar
The summer calendar opens with Morphou (Guzelyurt): the 48th Orange Festival runs 15-21 June at the amphitheatre. Right after it, the 26th Famagusta Culture and Arts Festival runs from 23 June to 16 July at Othello Castle and the ancient theatre of Salamis, with concerts at 9 p.m. and a free opening night. The Mehmetcik Grape Festival sets up in the first week of August every year; it was 4-9 August in 2025, with the 2026 dates not yet announced. The TRNC's (North Cyprus) own public holidays also land on the calendar: 20 July Peace and Freedom Day, 1 August Communal Resistance Day, 15 November Republic Day, plus 23 April, 1 May, 19 May, 30 August and 29 October. Banks and government offices close on those days, but restaurants and supermarkets in tourist areas mostly stay open and the airport keeps running. Religious holidays fall early in 2026: Ramadan Bayram (Eid al-Fitr) on 20-22 March and Kurban Bayram (Eid al-Adha) on 27-30 May, and flight prices can jump to two and a half times normal in those weeks.
How the School Calendar Moves Flight and Hotel Prices
If you are travelling from Turkey, the school calendar sets the price. In the Ministry of Education's 2026-2027 plan, schools open on 14 September; family holidays end that day, and the average one-way fare from Istanbul climbs from 1,034 lira in January to 4,599 lira in September — the month-by-month table is in the flights article. Expect a small second wave in November: the 16-20 November mid-term break stacks on top of the 15 November holiday, and prices can concentrate in that week.
