Dipkarpaz (Rizokarpaso): Village and Area Guide

📍 Dipkarpaz, Iskele

A reminder: if your tank is half empty on the road to the tip of the Karpaz Peninsula, you have no choice but to turn back. The last reliable petrol pump and the last place to shop are both in Dipkarpaz, and beyond the village there is neither. Together with "Yenierenköy (Yialousa)", these are the last two stops where you can top up your bag and your tank. The asphalt more or less ends here too; after this it turns to gravel in places, so making up for a missing item can cost you hours. That is why everyone arriving in the village faces the same question: will you treat it as a stopover where you fill up and move on, or will you spend the night here as well? Let's look at the details.

No Going Beyond the Village Without a Full Tank

A car leaving Kyrenia reaches the village after about 123 kilometres and two hours twenty minutes. For those coming from the Famagusta side, the calculation is between 1.5 and 2 hours. Seen from Ercan Airport, the common figure is around 96 kilometres and 1.5 hours, though these values come from transfer websites and are rounded. On public transport the picture is clearer: one or two services a day call at the village, and no route goes beyond it. A rental or private car is therefore not a preference but a plain necessity.

The rule on fuel is clear. The pumps here and in Yenierenköy are the peninsula's last reliable points, and according to the sources we researched, there is no station operating towards "Golden Beach (Altınkum)" and the monastery. The same limitation continues with shopping: the shops stay at village-grocer level, so anyone expecting a chain supermarket will be disappointed. It is worth bearing in mind that cards may not be accepted at every till; carrying cash is not considered an old-fashioned habit here. Sorting out medicines and anything health-related before setting off is also the safest course, because such services are found in the peninsula's larger centres.

Dipkarpaz (Rizokarpaso): Village and Area Guide

The Whole Village Fits Around the Square

The settlement sits at the north-eastern tip of the Karpaz Peninsula and administratively belongs to Iskele district. Since this is both the largest and the outermost village on the peninsula, all the everyday business of the tip is concentrated in the same streets. The square really is small, and life revolves around it. The church, the schools and the branch building of Erenköy Karpaz Municipality are gathered in the village centre. Don't be surprised to see Rizokarpaso in the records; it is the second name of the same place.

Today's calm does not quite match its past. Why? Because in the "Lusignan" period this was the seat of one of the island's baronies, and in those years the village carried administrative weight. Giving a clear population figure is difficult; nobody has yet explained the difference between the record based on the 2011 census and older estimates. What is certain is that the scale does not exceed a village of a few thousand, and anyone coming here expecting the bustle of a town will be mistaken.

The Church Restoration Was Completed in 2022

The "Ayios Synesios Church" on the square is the village's best-known building. According to the source, the eastern part of the building goes back to the 12th century, and the rest took its present form through later additions. The comprehensive restoration took a long time and was completed on 28 November 2022. The work was carried out by the bi-communal "Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage" together with UNDP, with a small share of the budget contributed by the European Commission. The work was not confined to the walls: the iconostasis and the icons went through a separate conservation, and the courtyard's drainage and landscaping were renewed. For a village church, a programme this detailed is far from ordinary. A second church is also still standing in the village; the building known as Holy Trinity is counted among the active churches.

You will see the village's real distinguishing feature on the school side. On the Turkish side, Dipkarpaz Primary School and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Secondary School, and on the Greek side, Rizokarpaso Primary School, all teach in the same settlement. With a Greek Cypriot Orthodox community of around 250 people, this is also home to the largest such community in North Cyprus. There is no separate show of this on the street; two schools operating in the same village is considered an ordinary part of daily life.

Few Beds, and the Kitchen Is Inside the Guesthouse

Looking for a big hotel here is pointless; the fabric stays at the level of stone houses and small guesthouses. Within that fabric, two names consistently stand out. "Oasis at Ayfilon" is a simple ten-room place right next to the Ayios Philon Church, built over an ancient Roman harbour. "Karpaz Arch Houses" opened in 2002 with the restoration of five stone houses, and with its twelve arched-ceiling units it is cited as the model example of village guesthouse-keeping. Since prices shift with the season and the date, it is worth getting the current offer directly from the property.

With food, expectations need adjusting from the start, because there are few independent restaurants and most dinners come out of the kitchen of the place you are staying in. Two names come up often: "Nikos Restaurant" and "Ayios Sinensis Restaurant". Both work at village pace, so if you are going with a large group, letting them know in advance will make things easier. In any case, the real reason for spending a night in the village begins just beyond it.

The Roads to Golden Beach and the Monastery Part Here

Altınkum, that is "Golden Beach", lies 19 to 20 kilometres along the same coastline and takes 25-30 minutes by car. Apostolos Andreas Monastery is about 15 kilometres to the north-east along the Karpaz main road. Each counts as a separate stop. Spending a night here therefore gives real comfort to anyone who wants to visit the two stops separately.

The asphalt is fine as far as Dipkarpaz; after that the dirt and gravel sections begin, so anyone driving a low car inevitably slows down. There is also a frequently confused point. Karpaz Gate Marina is not in this village; it is elsewhere on the peninsula, on the Yenierenköy side.

The Donkeys Don't Care About Your Horn

In the national park area just beyond the village, wild donkeys roam free and are all too used to cars. They stand in the middle of the road and poke their heads in through open windows. In 2023 an official Donkey Management Project began. The ten-year plan is run jointly by the Cyprus Wildlife Research Institute, Erenköy-Karpaz Municipality and the Environmental Protection Department, and it covers health checks, microchipping and population management. As of summer 2026, the plan has moved off paper and into field implementation.

Is feeding them banned? There is no written ban, but the logic of the conservation project implicitly treats uncontrolled feeding as a problem. Keeping the window closed and watching the animal from the car is in the interest of both you and the herd. Slowing down in the late afternoon and at dusk is also essential, because in the dark an animal can comfortably stand on the asphalt. Setting out in daylight and returning before dark is the most comfortable plan, considering both the road surface and the herd. If you choose to spend a night in Dipkarpaz, that plan takes care of itself.
