Leaving work in Istanbul on Friday afternoon and sitting down to dinner at Kyrenia harbour the same night is possible on the summer schedule: the AJet flight departing Istanbul Airport at 18.55 lands at Ercan at 20.25. In a weekend Cyprus plan squeezed into two nights, the difficulty lies not in the flight but in the maths. The Sunday return is the most expensive day of the week, and rental cars charge three days between Friday and Sunday. The budget here assumes a hotel in central Kyrenia and getting around without a car.
Friday Evening: Landing at Ercan
Straight after work you need to reach the airport two to three hours early, because on the Ercan route — which counts as international — web check-in closes 90 minutes before departure. The 18.55 AJet from Istanbul Airport is the only confirmed evening departure. There are also late flights from Sabiha Gökçen, but since schedules change week to week, pick your time from a booking engine. Friday is the most expensive outbound day at Istanbul Airport: in Trip.com's twelve-month average, a one-way ticket at 3,100-3,500 TL on Tuesday-Wednesday rises to 4,550 TL on Friday. If you're travelling with just a cabin bag, note that Pegasus's Light package doesn't include cabin baggage — it's limited to a 3-kilo, 40x30x15 under-seat bag. Once through passport control, Kyrenia is 43-44 kilometres away, 40-50 minutes over the Kyrenia Mountains (Beşparmak) pass. As of August 2026, a pre-booked standard sedan transfer runs 2,300-2,800 TL. The taxi meter switches to the night tariff after 22.00, and the same journey comes to 2,200-2,450 TL. A 20.25 landing also makes KIBHAS's last departure at 22.30 — 450 TL per person; the timetable is in our taxi and transfer article. The gain from pre-booking a transfer is less about price and more about flight tracking and a name board. Since ride-hailing apps don't work on the island, request the price in writing over WhatsApp. You'll reach your hotel around 22.00; the harbour bars are open at that hour, and it's not too late for a first dinner.
Saturday: All Day in Kyrenia
It's a ten-minute walk from hotel to harbour. Coffee on the waterfront around 10.30 and entering the castle at 11.00 is the most comfortable pace. Kyrenia Castle and the Shipwreck Museum inside it are open until 19.00 on the summer schedule, and the pair take an hour and a half to two hours. The harbour car park is paid and full in season — the first payoff of coming without a car shows itself here. At lunchtime, fish and meze at the harbour tables run 1,000-1,700 TL per person; since fish is sold by weight, ask the price before ordering. In the afternoon, the bazaar along Ziya Rızkı Caddesi or the beaches out towards Alsancak; we've mapped out the neighbourhoods in our Kyrenia guide. Don't try to cram Bellapais and St. Hilarion into this day — each wants half a day.
In the evening the harbour fills up. The meyhanes (tavernas) serve their set menus at 1,700-2,800 TL per person, and finding a table without a reservation is hard at weekends. The harbour bars and the bar street off Ziya Rızkı Caddesi fill after 23.00, with weekend closing usually stretching to 04.00-05.00. We've covered the live music venues in our nightlife guide. If you've chosen a casino hotel, ID is required at the gaming floor entrance, the minimum age is 25, and students enrolled in the TRNC (North Cyprus) aren't admitted. Sunday Morning: Bellapais or St. Hilarion
Suitcase left with reception in the morning, on the road at 09.00. The route doesn't turn towards Nicosia, because the Nicosia museums under the Department of Antiquities (such as the Mevlevi Tekke and the Derviş Paşa Mansion) are closed at weekends and on holidays; the same practice is reported for Salamis and Othello Castle in Famagusta. The castles and abbeys around Kyrenia, on the other hand, are open seven days a week. Free Sunday entry is granted only to TRNC citizens, so tourists pay the full ticket. Bellapais Abbey is 10-15 minutes from the centre by car, around 370 TL on the meter. Coffee under the Tree of Idleness and a tour of the abbey take you through to noon. St. Hilarion sits at the end of a 10-kilometre mountain road, its steps are steep, it takes two hours to explore, and you need to have the taxi wait for the return.
Can both fit into the same morning? Only with an 08.30 start and a rental car; without a car, one of the two is enough for a couple. Leaving it to the afternoon gets tight too: two hours at the castle, the descent, the suitcase and the road to Ercan stacked together strain even an 18.00 departure for a 21.30 flight. Coming down from the mountain, Niazi's on the Karaoğlanoğlu coast road does its şeftali kebab at 650-900 TL for a quick Sunday lunch. A daytime-tariff taxi to Ercan is 1,850-2,050 TL. If you booked the transfer round-trip on Friday, this line item is already closed.
Sunday Evening: Return Flights
On Sunday evenings there are late departures from Ercan to four cities. Times are from the summer schedule, valid for August-September 2026, and airlines may change them:

Finding a time is easy; it's the Sunday date that sets the price. In Trip.com's twelve-month one-way averages, Sunday is the most expensive day of the week on all four routes: a ticket to Sabiha Gökçen that costs 2,860 TL on Wednesday is 5,280 TL on Sunday, Istanbul Airport is 8,430 TL against 4,430, Ankara 6,045 TL against 3,030; on the Izmir route the gap is narrower, at about one and a half times. Combined with the Friday Istanbul premium, the round-trip total of a weekend Cyprus ticket comes to 1.5-2 times the midweek price. The two overnight flights in the last row are written into the Sunday schedule. If you can face starting Monday morning without sleep, check their price separately — and confirm the day on the booking engine.
A Weekend Rental Car Counts as Three Days
Rental sites show daily prices, but the rule is tied to weekdays: requests covering Friday, Saturday and Sunday are charged a minimum of three days, while one- and two-day pricing applies Monday to Thursday. Picking up Friday night and returning Sunday evening is already three days under this rule. As of August 2026, the economy class runs 2,400-3,000 TL a day, a weekend total of 7,200-9,000 TL plus fuel, with 95-octane at 68 TL a litre. For two people, booking the transfer round-trip and taking one or two taxis in town stays around 5-6 thousand TL. How does the maths turn with four people? The rental fee divides by four and Bellapais and St. Hilarion fit into the same morning — then the car pulls ahead. If you're taking the wheel, traffic drives on the left; look right twice at the first roundabout, and the office wants to see a plastic licence.
The Agency's Weekend Package Is Three Nights
Under the display price of flight-inclusive Cyprus packages sits the same clause: valid for midweek flights (excluding Friday-Sunday) and limited availability. As of August 2026, a two-night package on midweek dates sits in the 19-24 thousand TL band per person; at the same agency, two nights falling on a weekend rise to 30 thousand TL. What the agency calls a "weekend package" is defined as Thursday-Sunday, three nights and four days, and lands at 25-29 thousand TL. The Friday-Sunday two nights you're after doesn't fit that definition. Staying one extra night and taking that package is sometimes cheaper than buying two nights on weekend dates. If you're staying two nights, buying the flight and hotel separately gives you more control. If you're staying at a casino resort, get written confirmation at booking that the transfer is included — it doesn't come automatically with a standalone room reservation.
On the Ercan route, the average September fare is four times January's, and the Sunday premium stacks on top. On the same Friday-Sunday pattern, a weekend Cyprus ticket comes much cheaper in October-November or March-April.
