Someone walking onto the gaming floor for the first time usually carries just their ID and the money they've set aside for that evening. The ID is registered at reception, the cash turns into chips at the cage, and the rest, we might say, depends on the table you sit at. Among Cyprus casino games, roulette and blackjack draw the biggest crowds. Poker runs in its own room, under its own rules. You'll work out which one to sit at while wandering the floor. There are two things to know before buying chips: how each game works, and how winnings are paid out from the cage.
The Cage Issues Chips in Three Currencies
As we said, registration is done with an ID card or passport, and in return you receive a player's card. Is there a fee for the card? No. The spending starts with the gaming money you load onto it. At Merit's hotels this card is also tied to a loyalty programme — a points system runs as you play. The cage converts all three of dollars, euros and Turkish lira into chips. Since table chips are issued in dollars, guests who don't want to leave the exchange to the cage arrive with dollars. There's no cash machine in the gaming area, so set aside the evening's money before leaving your room.
Payment of winnings is governed by Article 13 of the Games of Chance Law, and the article lists three routes. Cash is paid directly from the cage. If a cheque is chosen, the operator writes a same-day cheque in the player's name, drawn on the operator's own account at a bank in the TRNC (North Cyprus). With a transfer, the money goes from the operator's account on the island to the player's account. There is no fourth route. The same article obliges the operator to hold at least 150,000 Euros in cash — or the equivalent in TL — in the cage at every morning's opening; the Council of Ministers may raise this floor by at most 50 percent a year. It's a system built so that a winning guest doesn't leave the floor that night without their money.
The Number the Ball Lands On, the Hand That Doesn't Exceed 21
A mid-sized floor holds roughly five or six roulette tables, about twenty card tables and around a hundred slot machines, and this scale swings both ways depending on the property. In roulette, the croupier spins the ball, and it settles on one of the numbers from 0 to 36. A bet can be placed on a single number, or on a broad group such as a colour or odd-even. Some properties have set electronic roulette terminals next to the physical wheel. The gold-plated, full-HD-screen example at Elexus runs the same game on a screen.
In blackjack your opponent is the croupier, not the other players at the table. You try to bring your cards' total as close to 21 as possible without going over, and the croupier does the same with their own hand. A hand that exceeds 21 loses outright. Pausing to ask the croupier when a rule isn't clear is normal at the table, so have no doubts on that score.. This is one of the most widespread table games on TRNC floors. Some of the bigger floors also open a baccarat table, though not every property; there the player's hand and the banker's hand are compared, and the one closest to nine wins.
At the Poker Table, Everyone Plays Against Each Other
In poker the croupier deals the cards, but those at the table play the game among themselves. Both the winners and the losers come from that table. Merit Crystal Cove in Alsancak, with its thirty-plus tables, is the island's poker address. No Limit Texas Hold'em is played at 2-5 dollar tables, and Pot-Limit Omaha tables open on request. The room opens at 20.00 on weekdays and two hours earlier at weekends. Elexus's separate poker room also runs Texas Hold'em. Cratos keeps its poker tables in the same area as its sports betting section.
Poker also has an international tournament calendar. The “Merit Poker Classic”, for instance, was played in Kyrenia at the end of April and drew participants from 34 countries. In the same period, Merit's summer calendar held two more series: in the NOIR Series starting 27 July at Merit Royal Diamond, the main event buy-in was 5,500 dollars, with 769 players registering for a 6-million-dollar guaranteed pool.
In the ONYX High Roller Series starting 7 August, the buy-in was set at 25,500 dollars and the pool at 5 million. These series are events followed by professional and semi-professional players. Does a first-time guest have any business with this calendar? Not really. Tickets Instead of Tokens at the Slots
A slot machine is loaded with credit by card or cash; the rest is a matter of pressing the button. The reels or the symbols on the screen spin, and depending on the line-up the machine pays out or doesn't. Its old name is the one-armed bandit; some call it a jackpot machine. No tokens circulate on Merit's floors. The machine prints winnings as a ticket through a system called TITO, and the ticket is converted to cash at the cage or at a dedicated kiosk on the floor. This is also the game that confuses people most at first sitting. The author of an old first-visit piece published in Hürriyet spent the whole evening unable to work out which line-up paid what. The same piece describes the roulette table as the chattiest corner of the floor, and the blackjack table as the place where the croupier's patience is tested.
Among Cyprus casino games, the cost of sitting down varies by game. Since hotel websites don't publish table minimums, the bands in the table are a digest of observations and shift with the floor and the day.

Photos Forbidden, Smoking Allowed in Most Places
Don't forget that raising your phone in the gaming area causes trouble — both photos and video calls are forbidden on most floors. There's no such clause in the law; the venues set the rule for the privacy of their other guests. The warning comes from the croupier or from security. On smoking, guests arriving from Turkey encounter a scene they're not used to. There's no clear legislation; the one available source says smoking happens on most floors, with some properties designating a separate area. On dress, the law is silent too; broadly, a clean casual look appropriate for the occasion is expected, and a guest arriving in beachwear may not get past reception.
On the refreshments side there's a tradition but no guarantee: drinks come to playing guests — and sometimes they don't — varying by property and by how much you play. A complaint from early 2026 tells of a guest who spent ninety minutes at a machine without being offered so much as a cigarette. Talking to the croupier is fine — asking about rules or table minimums is considered normal.
On Request, the Floor Calls a Psychologist
When you hand over your ID at the entrance, the fact that you're over 25 is already on record; the rest depends on what happens inside. Two pieces of advice come up most often for a first night: don't sit at a table whose rules you don't know, and don't immediately push your winning chips back into play. Not converting your credit card into gaming money is on the same list. Decide in your hotel room, before buying chips, what number you'll walk away at; nobody on the floor will ask you for it. The fifth paragraph of Article 23 of the law imposes an obligation most first-timers have never heard of. When a playing guest requests it, the floor must call in its contracted psychologist or psychiatrist. Even at slots, the lowest-threshold of the Cyprus casino games, a few hours is enough to run through the money set aside for the evening. A guest who heads up to their room when the money runs out, instead of buying new chips, will never need that paragraph.
