Kervansaray Public Beach (Kyrenia)

If you are getting ready to shield your wallet at the gate, stop, there is no need: on 10 March 2023 Kyrenia Municipality officially closed the ticket era at Kervansaray Public Beach. Since Mayor Murat Senkul settled the matter with the words "the beaches belong to the people", no money changes hands at that gate. So we went through this stretch of coast in Karaoglanoglu item by item: what is free, what costs money, and where the sand gives way to stone.

The only payment comes from those who rent a sunbed and umbrella, and that happens at the hut on the sand. Parking is free, and the lifeguard is on the tower only in the summer season. The beach itself is in Karaoglanoglu, roughly 6.5 kilometres by car from Kyrenia centre; and the ground is not sand from end to end, stones and pebbles cover part of the shoreline. Merit Park Hotel & Casino stands in the same Kervansaray area, and since the hotel's own shore is rocky, guests who want sand come down to this beach. The municipality's announcement that day was not limited to scrapping the ticket either; the same text declared that the beach would be extended. As for whether you will make do with a towel or a sunbed on the day you visit, the answer is still at the hut.

From Omer Kurt Street to the Sand

The beach's address appears in the records as "Omer Kurt Street, Karaoglanoglu" or "Karaoglanoglu-Kervansaray shore". Both lead to the same gate, so there is little room for confusion on the map. For those setting out from Kyrenia, the cleanest route is to turn west along the coast road. The beach announces itself from the main road, so it is good that you do not have to hunt around for signs. The same strip continues west towards Alsancak and then Lapta, and the big hotels line up one after another along this stretch.

Coming from the centre by minibus or shared taxi is also possible, but do not bother looking for fixed route numbers on the vehicles. With no numbers to go by, it inevitably comes down to a word with the driver: before boarding, just poke your head in the door and ask, "Captain, do you drop off at Kervansaray?" If you have no car, the other option is to go on foot. From the exit of Merit Park, follow the coast road and a short seven-minute walk puts you on the sand, while Kaya Palazzo Resort & Casino practically stands back to back with the beach. Guests of both giant hotels end up on this beach too, but they do not hold the deeds to the shore; the operation rests entirely with Kyrenia Municipality and the coast is open to everyone. Those arriving in their own car find the car park right at the entrance, directly behind the beach. Of course, for hotel guests in the area the real luxury is obvious: throwing a towel over your shoulder, walking to the water's edge, and never touching the car's ignition for the whole holiday.

The 2023 Announcement Went Beyond Tickets

Our research shows that the municipality's statement dated 10 March 2023 included an expansion plan alongside the ticket decision. According to the plan, a new entrance area was to be added at the western end of the beach, an additional lifeguard tower built, a car park constructed and the stones along the shore cleared. The reasoning is spelled out in the text: equal access for all income groups to the city's natural assets. So what did the ticket sold at the gate before the decision mean? For a family of four, every beach day was a separate line in the budget. Once the municipality removed that line, the beach stopped being a place only hotel guests dropped into and turned into an area the surrounding neighbourhoods use daily. The municipality published the decision on its own page under the headline "Kervansaray Beach is being extended", and the Union of Turkish Cypriot Municipalities announced the same text. Today nobody stops you at the gate, and no ID or ticket is asked for. Money changes hands only at the hut, and only for those who want equipment.

Sunbeds Are Paid Separately at the Hut

No money at the gate does not mean everything on the beach is free. Anyone who wants a sunbed and umbrella pays separately at the hut; since the municipality has not published a figure, the price varies by season. The safest approach is therefore to ask at the hut before renting. If you bring your own umbrella and towel, you pay nothing all day. The same distinction holds for visitors with disabilities: a separate section is set aside in the car park, arrangements for disabled use have been made on the beach, and no extra charge is asked for these services. In short, the model works on the same logic as the other municipal beaches where entry tickets were abolished; the sand and the sea are of course free, the chair you sit on is rented. That is why the sums are simple for a family spending the day on the beach: those who bring their equipment pay only for the snack bar, those who do not add a sunbed line on top.

Part of the Beach Is Pebbly

Showers, toilets and changing cabins line up right behind the beach. At the end of the same row a small snack bar sells fast food, and cold drinks and ice cream come from this counter too. As for the ground, one adjective is not enough, because stone, pebbles and sand sit side by side along the shore. What does someone expecting fine sand from end to end find? In some sections the footing is stony as you enter the water, so sea shoes come in handy; families arriving with small children would do well to factor this in. The stone clearing in the municipality's 2023 plan targeted exactly this point. The municipality has not announced the beach's length in metres, but which end the sand concentrates at can be seen at a glance on site. A few steps may be all it takes to find a flat spot to lay a towel.

The Lifeguard Arrives When the Season Opens

In the summer months the beach has a lifeguard tower, first-aid equipment and a swimming area marked off with buoys. The tower was among the structures promised in the 2023 announcement. Still, this service runs on a calendar. Before the sea season officially opens, Kyrenia Municipality announces that there is no lifeguard at Kervansaray Public Beach or at Karaoglanoglu (Antis) Public Beach, and leaves swimmers to their own responsibility. The two beaches are in the same area, but they are separate facilities and guide sites occasionally mix them up. So when exactly does the season open? There is no fixed date, since the municipality announces it separately each year. Anyone planning for late April or mid-October would do well to check on site whether someone is on the tower. Even within the season, the buoy line is the boundary of the swimming area; whoever goes beyond it is out of the tower's sight. That is why the safest hours for a family with children are before noon, when the lifeguard is on the tower.

Locals at the Weekend, Hotel Guests on Weekdays

The busy season runs from May to October, while spring and autumn days are comparatively quiet. Kervansaray Public Beach does not operate like a hotel beach; it counts as the surrounding neighbourhoods' own beach, which is why it fills up fast at weekends. On a Saturday afternoon there may be neither a parking space nor a shaded spot left, and Sunday is no different. Weekday mornings, on the other hand, are relaxed for both the car park and the sand, and those who come on foot have no parking worries anyway. We have also heard in reviews that traffic from the hotel side has grown over the past year. Pia Bella Hotel has been carrying its guests to this beach on its own shuttle twice a day since 15 May 2026, though the hotel is in Kyrenia centre. So the beach no longer serves only the Karaoglanoglu area. Anyone wanting to escape the crowds is left with two options: a weekday morning, or before June. Whoever picks the second should bear in mind that there may be no lifeguard on the tower.
