Bafra Public Beach

If you are not staying at one of the hotels, the shoreline of Bafra's four big resorts is closed to you; none of those beaches can be reached without passing through a hotel gate. The only stretch of sand in the area that a traveller without a hotel booking heads for is "Bafra Public Beach", which Mehmetcik Municipality renovated and reopened to the public with a launch event on 18 November 2025. In our research we looked one by one at where that beach is, how its fees work and where the administrative line between it and the hotel strip runs. The beach sits on the coast of Bafra village in Iskele district, right next to that hotel strip, roughly 12 km from Iskele town centre and about 40 km from Famagusta. No ticket is sold at the entrance; money changes hands only if you rent a sunbed and umbrella. The ground is yellow sand, a lifeguard is on duty on the beach and there is a car park right beside it. The municipality runs the beach, but the "tourism zone" where the hotels stand is a separate investment area: the two are neighbours, yet administered separately. The beach's last seven years can be summed up in two dates: a tender controversy in 2019 and a renovation in 2025.

What Changed in November 2025?

At the November 2025 meeting the municipality listed the completed works one by one. According to reports online, the landscaping was renewed, the social facilities were overhauled and the security arrangements completed. Infrastructure was added too: a wastewater treatment plant was commissioned and the pump station came out of maintenance. The beach thus went back into service as a social space. The gathering was announced as a "presentation and thank-you" event, meaning the municipality was showing the public the finished work. In the same reports the institution appears as "Mehmetcik Buyukkonuk Municipality", as the two settlements have been merged under a single roof. But does it end there? No; the face of the beach may change once more in the coming seasons. Next up is the "Mega Beach Project". Its first phase plans eight sales kiosks, areas reserved for women producers and a cultural corridor where handicrafts will be displayed. The project tender has been completed, but construction has not started. So a visitor arriving today sees the renovation finished at the end of 2025, while the mega project waits on paper. Even so, this renovation is the first major investment in the beach to reach the public eye since 2019.

The 2019 Tender Controversy

On 21 January 2019 the municipal council decided to lease the operating rights of the restaurant inside the beach by tender. Within four days the decision hit the news under the headline "beach being privatised". The administration of the day denied the claim on 25 January; civil society groups still objected with a press statement in March. Yet only the restaurant went to tender, not the beach. The debate lasted a few months, then dropped off the agenda. Since then not a single report has appeared saying the beach was sold or its operation passed to a private company. On the contrary, the November 2025 renovation was carried out with the municipality's own resources. Today the beach stands where that debate ended: in municipal hands, and of course free to enter. Which name the restaurant trades under, and who runs it, does not appear in municipal announcements. What's more, it was reported that the restaurant never opened at all in the 2021 season, so it is safer to plan your meals around the snack bar before you go.

Entry Is Free, Sunbeds Are Paid Separately

There is no ticket at the gate. Reports written in various years from 2014 to 2021 all converge on the same point: entry is free, sunbeds and umbrellas are extra. The sunbed fee is kept low, and the figure is set anew at the start of each season. Since the umbrella is counted under the same item, it is rented together with the sunbed; no standalone price is announced. The figures in old reports have lost their meaning under today's inflation, so it is worth asking the beach attendant for the current tariff. Disabled visitors do not pay for sunbeds either. The beach has at least two accessible sunbeds, and Bafra Public Beach counts as one of the first beaches on the island to install this equipment. Around 450 sunbeds were counted here in 2021; that figure shows the scale of the beach, not its price. Nobody asks for money from anyone who spreads their own towel on the sand.

Yellow Sand, with a Lifeguard on Duty

The ground is yellow sand with a golden tint, and there are no rocks. A paved access path runs down from the car park to the beach. A lifeguard is on site throughout the season. The snack bar and beach bar sell hot and cold drinks and snacks, and there is also a restaurant building inside the beach. The beach is described as a wide family beach, although there is no published measurement of waves or depth. Anyone coming with children therefore asks the lifeguard about the day's conditions before going into the water. Expectations on the shade front should be kept low too, because the only shade on offer is the rental umbrella; trees or pergolas are not mentioned in any announcements. On the other hand, the wastewater treatment plant commissioned in November 2025 directly concerns this beach's seawater. In reports before the renovation the facility list was limited to lifeguard, car park, snack bar and restaurant; the treatment plant and pump station were only added to that list in 2025.

Where Is the Border with the Hotel Shore?

Before you go, one question lingers: "Where does the hotel shore end and the public beach begin?" The two areas sit side by side, yet no source gives the boundary in metres. The beaches of "Kaya Artemis", "Concorde", "Limak" and "Noah's Ark" in the Bafra Tourism Zone are open only to their own guests at this point, so for day visitors this is the only municipal beach named in the area. That was exactly the reasoning behind the 2019 objection: if the beach changed hands, no sand outside the hotels would be left. Since Bafra village's total coastline also includes the hotel strip, the length figures given for the village are in no way the public beach's own measurement. As a hotel guest you can walk over to the public beach, but don't try it the other way round: it doesn't work. In our research we found that the municipality does not state the public beach's own length; among everything we examined, the only yardstick left is again the 450-sunbed figure from 2021.

Opens at Nine in the Morning

The beach opens at 09:00 seven days a week. The closing time does not appear in municipal announcements, so anyone planning an evening asks the attendant. Since the attendant is on site all season, both the tariff and the closing time are learned on the spot. The car park is right next to the beach; there is no separate charge for the car, and no ID or ticket check either. Those coming by car take the coast road from the Iskele or Famagusta direction and follow the Bafra sign. As the village that gives the beach its name lies just behind the coast, the beach sits on the village's seaward side. Coming from Iskele you drive the 12 km along the coast; coming from Famagusta you spend most of the 40 km on the same road. Whether the snack bar is open out of season is not announced, and you may find it closed when you arrive - so anyone planning a winter trip needs to bring their own water. The only item you pay for at Bafra Public Beach is the sunbed, and its price is quoted by the attendant on the day.
