Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts
📍 Near East University, Nicosia
Some of the museums people visit in Nicosia are housed in the stone mansions of the walled city (and run by a government department). The Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts falls outside that description. It is neither inside the walls nor attached to a museums department. Its address is the Near East University campus on Near East Boulevard. The museum was founded by the university. The core of the collection consists of works from the 1940s to the present by artists from 14 Turkic states and communities. Because the institution behind the door is a university, decisions about hours, admission and calendar are made by the university too. Here are the details.
A Collection That Does Not Rest on a Single Branch
In the collection the museum presents, painting sits under the same roof as sculpture, photography, ceramics, glass, models, decorative objects, graphic art and mixed-media work. We recommend looking at the scope of the collection before you go. In the institutional records we examined, conflicting figures circulate for the total number of works. That is why we are not giving a single number here. The collection is far more than paintings.
A 2018 news item describes the art centre attached to the museum as having four galleries. The 2018 opening programme was built the same way: on one side a Feryal Sükan retrospective, on the other a Mustafa Hastürk exhibition together with a group show of the university's artists, all opened to visitors in the same period. It was a multi-exhibition venue from day one. If you are setting out to see a particular work, ask in advance whether that piece is in the gallery that day, because we could not find in the records we scanned which building displays the permanent collection. You can take that question to the switchboard; that is the most reliable route.

Two Names, Two Separate Buildings
The museum's own news page announces most of its 2026 exhibitions under the name "GÜNSEL Art Museum Exhibition Hall". Looking at the sources, this name belongs to a separate museum under the same umbrella, and that museum is not on campus but on Dereboyu, where it opened in December 2025. The Minister of National Education, Nazım Çavuşoğlu, attended the opening, and the museum opened its doors with around 700 works. Two buildings, two museums. Because this overlapping usage is repeated in the announcements, it is not clear from an announcement which building an exhibition has opened in. So which building is the exhibition in, the campus or Dereboyu? Anyone setting out for a specific exhibition should confirm the address with the museum beforehand; as of 2026 the switchboard number is +90 392 680 20 00, extension 5656. (We recommend confirming before you go.)
Foundations Laid in July, Founded in August
Anyone asking how old the museum is will find two separate dates, and both are correct. The museum's own website gives 9 August 2018 as its founding day, while the building's foundations were laid the same summer, on 20 July 2018. In the records we have, the two are listed separately. All in all, an eight-year-old museum. The university attributes the idea behind the initiative to the vision of its founding rector, Suat Günsel. Since almost everything written about the museum comes from the university family's own publications, the words of praise built on its size also belong in the promotional column.
Meanwhile, for the centenary of the Republic in 2023 two exhibitions were opened, a hundred works were brought together, and the opening was performed by Prime Minister Ünal Üstel; the venue was the Atatürk Culture and Congress Centre Exhibition Hall on campus. The Fine Arts Republic Exhibition that opened in early 2024 featured works by twenty-eight artists from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. Türkiye was not on the list. This example shows that some exhibitions open in different halls around the campus. Call about the exhibition before setting out.
The Exhibition Calendar Turns Fast
By the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts' own count, an exhibition that opened in June 2026 was its 483rd, so the flow of exhibitions under this roof almost never stops. The museum's 2026 announcements look busy, but since most of the announcements we compiled were made under the name "GÜNSEL Art Museum Exhibition Hall", which building the exhibitions opened in is unclear. Habitat was announced at the end of April, The Spirit of Place in May, "Layers" in mid-June, and Traces of Civilisation and Wounds of War in August. The "Layers" exhibition stayed open from 15 June to 1 July 2026, featured fifty works selected from painting, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking, and admission was free. The exhibition window is longer than two weeks.
Does a short-run exhibition justify the trip to the campus? Considered for a single exhibition, the question is debatable, but once the other museums on campus are factored in, the journey makes more sense. The thing to watch here is the gap between the announcement date and your departure date. An exhibition announced in June is no longer waiting for an October 2026 visitor. Please check the dates within 2026.
Closed Mondays, Closes at 16.30
Anyone arriving on campus on a Monday will find a closed door. According to the museum's own website, visiting hours are closed on Monday and 10.00 to 16.30 from Tuesday to Sunday, so the day's plan needs to be built around the closing time. Public holidays and the academic calendar may change these hours; confirm via the museum's page or the switchboard before you go. Come early so as not to miss closing time.
Because this is not a state museum, the admission policy, the fee and seasonal campaigns are set by the university itself, and the discount and free-entry announcements we came across belong to earlier years. For the general visitor it counts as paid. But you can only learn the current tariff from the institution itself. Do not assume it is valid today. Asking the fee over the phone is easier than being surprised at the door.
The Other Stops Under the Same Roof
You can add a stop before leaving the campus. Since the university's museums are grouped under the name "Near East Formation Museums", the halls you visit on campus and the other stops in the city belong to the same institutional umbrella. Opposite the modern art museum is the Cyprus Car Museum, a separate visit in itself with its classic cars. The Herbarium and Natural History Museum on the same campus is visited by appointment. You need to call extension 5135 before going. The Walled City Museum at Kyrenia Gate belongs to the same umbrella too, but it is off campus. After the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts, add one of these stops to your programme; if you have chosen the Herbarium, an appointment is essential.
