Most passengers landing at Ercan look for the duty free on the day they fly home, at the departure gate. Yet the same operator also has a shop on the arrivals side; you will see the sign as you walk toward the baggage carousel. Ercan duty free is therefore not one shop but two shops in two directions — and a separate customs calculation for each direction. Entering the TRNC (North Cyprus), the island's own regulations apply; returning to Turkey, the Turkish Trade Ministry's table takes over. Neither the litres nor the quantities of the two lists match; what is free in one counts as excess in the other. In this article we break down the limits for both directions, what the euro on the price tag means in lira, and which shelves genuinely offer a bargain.
Kaner's Two Shops
The shops at Ercan are run by Kaner Group, which took the concession in 2013 for 25 years. With the new terminal opened in July 2023, the sales area grew to 6,000 square metres and the warehouse to 2,000. In a statement in the summer of 2024, Kaan Kaner said the Ercan staff had grown by 30 percent and that ten new brands each had joined the perfume-cosmetics and spirits-cigar shelves within a year. The range runs close to 20 thousand items.
The departures shop is easy to find: after passport control and the final security check, it appears on the upper floor of the waiting lounge. The arrivals shop is around the baggage and passport line; since directions are not given on the official site, follow the signs when you land. Opening hours track flight traffic — it is open for night flights too, but you may find it closed at hours with no flights. Do not forget to show your Miles&Smiles card at the till either; Kaner is a mileage partner of Turkish Airlines.
How Much Gets Through on the Return to Turkey
The airport's own website writes "as far as is known, 3 cartons of cigarettes and 3-4 bottles of spirits". That sentence is not a customs rule; it is the site's guess. The official allowance counts litres and units, not bottles; its basis is the passenger exemption table under Turkey's Customs Law No. 4458.

The most contested row in the table is alcohol. The two allowances are independent of each other — still, do not add them up as "3 litres free". Some interpretations treat them as a single allowance. You cannot know in advance how the officer at the gate will read it, so do not push the limit. Then there is the age question. Passengers under 18 have no tobacco or alcohol allowance. In a family with children, the calculation goes not by head count but only by the adults' allowances. Goods above 430 euros pass with a single flat tax up to 1,500 euros; for passengers arriving from the TRNC the rate is 30 percent.
There is also an item that never appears in the table: the phone. One device per three calendar years, no customs duty, but in 2026 there is a usage fee of 54,258 lira — and if the IMEI is not registered within 120 days, the device is cut off from the network. Even if a phone looks cheap at Ercan, if it is coming to Turkey the saving stays on paper.
What the Regulations Say on Entering the TRNC
Entering the island, the line is drawn by the Personal Exemptions Regulation of the TRNC Customs and Excise Department. A passenger arriving by air is allowed 400 cigarettes or 500 grams of tobacco, 150 centilitres of spirits, a separate line of 150 centilitres of wine, 100 millilitres of perfume, and goods up to 135 euros. Anything above passes with a flat 30 percent tax on a value customs itself sets; the tobacco and drink you bring must be for your own use and carried in your luggage. The 100-millilitre perfume figure is often confused with Turkey's 600 millilitres — assuming the two directions share the same rule is the mistake passengers make most. Bottles you buy at Istanbul or Sabiha Gökçen and bring to the island also fall under this regulation, not the Turkey table. For those crossing by land from the south there is a separate schedule: 40 cigarettes per person, 1 litre of spirits, again 135 euros. Someone walking across the Green Line has one tenth of the air passenger's cigarette allowance. The regulation's text in force dates from 2019 and may have changed since. Asking the officer at entry costs nothing.
Tags in Euros, Sums in Lira
At Ercan the price tags show only euros; unlike Istanbul, there is no screen letting you pick a currency. After a week on the island you will have been counting everything in lira — at the gate that habit is useless. At the 26 August 2026 rate, 1 euro sits around 56 lira. So a 30-euro whisky that day is close to 1,700 lira. Does the till take TL or cards? Plenty of passengers say it does, but do not set out treating that as guaranteed. If you pay by card, the amount on your statement is set by the shop's own exchange rate, and that rate can sit apart from the market. The cleanest route is to carry some euro cash. If you will pay by card, ask for the till's rate before paying and keep the receipt. Before heading to the till, take out your phone: multiply the euro on the tag by that day's rate and compare the result with what you would pay for the same bottle in Turkey. If only a few hundred lira separate them, carrying that bottle on the plane will not pay off.
Which Shelf Holds the Bargain
Where Ercan duty free genuinely stands apart is the spirits shelf. A litre of 12-year Chivas Regal runs 30-37.5 euros — by the 2026 lists, roughly half the shop price in Turkey. Jack Daniel's sits around 26.5 euros. In raki, the 100 cl bottle runs 13.5-21 euros; Beylerbeyi has been cut from 21 euros to 19, its twin pack is 35 euros, and Turkish rakis generally band at 21-23 euros. These ratios look cheap because the comparison is with the Turkish shelf. Perfume is where things get complicated, because no list specific to Ercan has been published. At Turkish airports the entry segment runs 20-40 euros and brands like Lancôme and Dior open around 90 euros, and the band at Ercan is close to that. Some lines beat Turkish retail, but in 2024 the Topuz newspaper found perfume and cosmetics dearer than the local market. Do not buy without comparing against Istanbul duty free and online prices. Expect no discounts on electronics and sunglasses; both are shelves that bring regret when bought without comparison. Chocolate, apart from the big gift packs, works out cheaper in the supermarket. The line "everything at half price" does not square with these numbers; even the airport's website settles for "somewhat more economical than the free shops in Turkey".
The Bag, Connections, and Which Direction to Buy In
Which shop should you buy from? It depends on the purpose. If it will be drunk or sprayed on holiday, the arrivals shop makes sense — you carry the bottle to the hotel and that is that. If it is going to Turkey, the departures shop is the right address, and the Turkey table above governs the maths. The departures side has the wider stock, the arrivals side spares you the carrying; where the bottle will be opened tells you which suits you. The liquids rule is the same in both directions. The shop puts the bottle in a sealed bag; the bag shows marks if anyone tries to open it. The receipt, dated the day of the flight, goes inside facing outward so it can be read, and security checks the two together. The figures circulating about how many hours the bag stays valid have no basis in the Turkish civil aviation authority's text; the only requirement is that the receipt carries that day's date. If you have a connection, do not open the bag until your final destination — open it and it can be confiscated at the transfer airport. Most Ercan-Turkey flights are direct, and the route still holds international status: you clear customs when you land in Turkey. If a domestic connection follows, the 100-millilitre rule starts again at domestic security — the bottle cannot stay in the cabin and goes into the suitcase. On a direct flight there is no such trouble.
The Final Tally
Every calculation at the Ercan duty free till comes down to where the bottle is headed. A bottle to be opened on the island answers to the TRNC regulation's 150 centilitres; a bottle going home to Turkey in the suitcase, to the Trade Ministry's 1 and 2 litres. If a child is travelling with you, leave their allowance out of the count, and if you plan to buy a phone, learn the fee beforehand. You do not set the exchange rate, but the receipt and the sealed bag are in your hands: keep both with you until you land in Turkey.
